Lecture Series – April 18th – Native Americans in 2012

The Abenaki Farm & Stables’ Lecture Series continues with Chief Wolf Spirit speaking, April 18th at 6:00, on the topic of Native Americans in 2012. He will elaborate on understanding the Native American lifestyle, beliefs and practices – past and present, explain and demonstrate traditional clothing, and also discuss powwows; what they truly are, the importance of them, and will detail the powwow to be hosted by Abenaki Farm & Stables, this coming Fall!

The Chief was sub Chief, then Chief of the Rhode Island Abenaki Council for nearly 20 years before retiring to New Hampshire. Here, he founded the Chief Wolf Spirit Council in Bristol, NH, for the purpose of educating people regarding Native ways, as well as, passing these ways on to the younger generations. The Council raises funds to scholarship Native Americans who are pursuing any area of education.

Chief Wolf Spirit (Gary Dumas) is also a Veteran of both the Vietnam and the Saudi Wars, as well as, an ordained Minister for the Native American religion.

He and his wife, Dancing Flower (Nancy Dumas), are the proud parents of five sons and a daughter, and five granddaughters. The Chief enjoys carpentry and woodworking in his shop, and has become a vital member of the Abenaki Farm & Stables family.

We have GREAT news! Lucy Davies, the fantastic Hunter/Jumper instructor from England, had so much fun with the Abenaki Farm crew, she’s coming back 4/22/12! Equine First Aid 101 – Winter Lecture Series – March 21st!

Here’s another fantastic lecture as part of our Abenaki Winter Lecture Series! Dr. Jen Malone, from Northern Lakes Vet Clinic, will present Equine First Aid 101, March 21st at 6:00! The lecture and demo will cover; what to include in your equine first aid kit, how to clean, treat and wrap wounds, and what to know before you call your vet – including how to take and assess vitals – temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, gut sounds, digital pulses, gum color, etc. Other topics we’ll learn about are, using and applying standing wraps, sweats vs. poultices, hoof dressings, pressure wraps, and so much more! Dr. Jen will also demonstrate all of the above and allow everyone to practice these techniques on “easy” horses, as well as, those who don’t stand so easily. The public is always welcome to attend and the price is always free! Hope to see you on the 21st!

Fran Hancock is Coming Back to Abenaki!

Dennis Reis Universal Horsemanship Clinic, conducted by Endorsed Instructor, Fran Hancock, is being held for a third year straight at Abenaki Farm and Stables! If you missed Fran the past two years then here is your chance to see her now!
This clinic is being held June 1st thru 4th.
The emphasis of this year’s clinic is “Speaking to Horses, communication and understanding; A Universal application of classical riding.” The clinic will cover body language, yours and the horse. Learn to correctly position yourself and prepare your horse to move each of its body parts independently, both from the ground and under saddle. Think of this as learning “words” and then Fran will assist in putting these “words” together to create a “conversation” with your horse, to perform different maneuvers.
The clinic will also cover the use of the teaching tools including the headstall set-up and the correct use of the snaffle bit for teaching your horse to become soft, responsive and be in better balance.
Whether you decide to participate with your horse, or just audit you will find the clinic an eye opening experience. But I do hope you’ll consider being a participant as most auditors leave wishing they had joined in with their horse.

Annual Spring Vaccination Clinic!

What’s a sure sign that Spring is just around the corner? The Annual Abenaki Vaccination Clinic! It’s certainly that time of year! The clinic will be held Saturday, March 24th, from 9:30 to 1:30. The super reduced cost is $110/ horse and includes all the following;
Drawing Coggins
Running a fecal sample to check for intestinal parasites
5 way vaccine (EEE, WEE, Flu, Rhino, and Tetanus)
Rabies vaccine
West Nile Vaccine
Physical Exam, including checking of teeth. (If horses need dental problems addressed we will have a separate dental day later in the Spring.)

Intranasal Strangles vaccine and Potomac Horse Fever vaccine is also available for an additional cost, if desired.

There is no extra charge for the more-than-welcome truck-ins! Just please contact the farm by March 21st and let us know that you are coming and if you would like the optional vaccines. You just can’t beat the price or the fun you will have!

WoW! Great job tonite Angela! So our Winter Lecture Series continues to be a hit in the community! We had an amazing turnout (last count, 29 people?) and, as usual, everyone learned so much! The North Country River Riders and the Oliverian School, plus numerous Abenaki students and friends all turned out to learn wonderful stretches for their horses, the importance of massage, and so much more! We appreciate your time, professionalism and knowledge, Angela! And all the horses appreciate your massage! Thank you, again! And thank you, everyone, who came tonite!
